Thought of the Week

"There is more to life than what you see around you, so have a little humility about what is real and what is not. Don't be so sure of the facts you have that you miss new ones." - Unknown

Member Spotlight - Dan O'Connor

I was born in Milwaukee County General Hospital with all of my father’s friends in the delivery room (True Fact my dad is a Dr)

I always wanted to be in the investment business. I have the job I always wanted

My very first job was paperboy in 7th grade,  The most stressful job was teaching drivers ed in college

My wife is from Switzerland (Not Sweden for Dick K.), I have a 14 and 11 year old boy

Kayaking, shooting sports, studied martial arts for over a decade but now I just attend Yoga

My largest business and career accomplishment decision was starting my own business in 2005.  I use the analogy that it feels like walking on a tight rope with out a net and then you just get comfortable with it

Business is about people and listening even if the behavior strikes you as irrational

Warren Buffet:  I was once interviewed by Bloomberg and refenced as a “hero worshiper” of Warren Buffett.  When asked about such hero worship Buffett said, “those people must be smoking something!”

Memorable Rotary Moments:  The bagpipes at Doyle Barker’s funeral

Most memorable vacation: Hunting in the hill country in Junction Texas.  No cell service for 150 miles

I became a Rotarian at the Sheboygan Early Bird Rotary Club  in 1999…up until then I didn’t know you could laugh this early in the am

I never wear my rotary pin cause they don’t fine you anymore

I’ve been to 1 Rotary International Convention and hosted 1 exchange student at my mother’s home

I am a Rotarian because of the people.  I simply love people and simply having fun.

Want to be one with the world? Hop on the subway

By Barbara Brotman

Let us now sing the praises of public transportation. It may be a small chorus: Public transit has had a rough ride lately. Ride-hailing services are eating into the customer base, funding is a constant battle, Elon Musk is throwing shade, and the New York City subways seem on the edge of catastrophe.

But I’m singing out. I’m not only a rider; I’m a fan.

Yes, I know all the downsides. People on Chicago’s “L” seem to have forgotten how to use earbuds. They conduct private phone calls at top volume. Everyone is squeezed in cheek – and not only the facial cheek – by jowl with strangers.

Yet I remain a defender. Beyond the convenience, the freedom from sitting in traffic, and the precious minutes to sit and read (should you be blessed with a seat), public transportation has a quality no car ride can match: It is public.

It is an increasingly rare spot where people of all backgrounds and social classes share life for a while.

Dispelling myths about the flu and flu shot

Dr. Christopher Eernisse (Cedarburg News Graphic 9/11/2018)

Can I catch the flu from the flu vaccine? The flu shot cannot give you the flu. People who report a runny nose or cough symptoms after receiving the flu vaccine are likely experiencing symptoms of a common cold, with which they were infected before they received the flu vaccine.

Isn’t the flu just a really bad cold? No. Influenza may cause cold symptoms, such as sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, hoarseness and cough. However, more than 36,000 people die and more than 200,000 are hospitalized each year because of flu complications, making this virus much more serious than a bad cold.

Is the flu shot just for the elderly and the sick? Even if you aren’t considered “high risk,” a flu shot can protect you, your family, friends and co-workers during the flu season. The more people who get vaccinated, the more people will be protected from the flu, including those who are most vulnerable. This includes the elderly, very young children, pregnant women and those with serious health conditions.

Does a person really need a flu vaccine every year? Yes. The vaccine is reformulated every year. The CDC identifies which influenza virus strains are expected to be the most prevalent for the upcoming year, so this year’s vaccine can be made to specifically protect against those strains. As a result, you need to protect yourself by getting the flu vaccine every year.
