Meeting Location Notice: Our next meeting will be Friday (7/19) at the Mequon Public Market located at 6300 W. Mequon Road, Mequon WI 53092.

Our speaker for this meeting will be our own Cindy Shaffer who will be updating us on this year's Lobsterfest. (For details see bio below.)

The greeter will provide either the thought, a Rotary minute, share a family moment or a cultural tradition ... anything they would like to start off the day positive.

The Appliance, Electronic & Lawn Equipment Recycling events for 2019  are July 27, 2019 and October 19, 2019.

Events will be held from 9:00am - 12:00pm in the parking lot of the Public Works building, 10800 N Industrial Drive.

Rotary and heavy metal

What do Rotary and heavy metal music have in common? The similarities may surprise you.

Every year, a special event takes place in Northern Germany where 100,000 heavy metal enthusiasts from all over the world gather. Jörg Scheller of the Zurich University of the Arts, who not only holds a doctorate in cultural studies but is also part of a heavy metal band, has summarized this community as “a hybrid, multi-ethnic and globalized fairground for all shades of color, mentality and gender,” and “a playing field of complex identities.”

At Rotary, friendship is the rock on which our organization was built, and tolerance holds it together, as Paul Harris once noted. This is an excellent match with heavy metal, which, as Scheller observes, “has crossed ideologies, political borders, and national borders in recent decades.”

Serenity Inns' Mission
Serenity Inns' Mission

Ellen Blathers is the co-founder and Executive Director of Serenity Inns, a Milwaukee non-profit. Serenity Inns works with men who are the fringes of society – men who are estranged from friends and family, homeless, recently released from prison, addicted to drugs or alcohol – and engages them in a structured, long-term rehab program, which includes housing for alumni.  Ms. Blathers received a Black Excellence Award from the Milwaukee Times in 2019; she was also runner-up for the Nonprofit Executive of the Year Award in 2017.

Speakers:

Ellen Blathers: Ellen is currently the Talent Acquisition Manager for A. O. Smith Corporation in Milwaukee. She also serves on the Human Resources & Compensation Committee for the Next Door Foundation of Milwaukee and the Talent & Education Committee for the Milwaukee Water Council.

Virginia Zignego: Virginia joined the staff of Serenity Inns in August 2018. She is responsible for Serenity's revenue streams which allow us to achieve our mission and maximize our impact in the community. She works on a daily basis with churches, foundations, individual donors and community partners. In her spare time, Virginia enjoys running, cooking, traveling and Milwaukee's arts.

David Romoser: David is the retired Senior V.P. General Counsel and Secretary of A. O. Smith Corporation. He maintains an alternate dispute resolution practice serving as a mediator and arbitrator. He also serves on a number of not-for-profit boards and as an advisor and consultant to several others.
