Thought of the Week

There is more to life than what you see around you, so have a little humility about what is real and what is not. Don't be so sure of the facts you have that you miss new ones. - Unknown

This week's Guest RYE  Student

Our guest RYE student at this week's Rotary meeting will be Lindsey Liao from Taiwan.

Lindsay came to us for the 2010-11 school year and now lives in the Netherlands where she works for a Chinese company. She majored in Business Administration and English/Mandarin Interpretation, and she recently earned an MBA in the Netherlands.

In addition to Mandarin, Taiwanese, and English, Lindsey spent time in Spain and Mexico learning Spanish. As you might guess, she is now learning Dutch. At the young age of 25, she has already traveled to "...40 something countries".

A Rotary LOL Moment

Group agrees to "Think globally but act locally"

On Saturday 18 April, four members of the MT Sunrise Rotary Club took part in a ZOOM meeting of international Rotarians.

MT Sunrise participants included President Dave Schlageter, Brian Monroe, Bob Blazich, and John Cabaniss who organized local participation through his current host club in Spain.

The meeting included Rotarians from Ukraine, Spain, Brazil, Shanghai, Canada, France, Gabon, The United Kingdom, Indonesia, The Philippines, and the United States.

As the group went through introductions, we were all asked to provide an update on our local COVID-19 situation. During the hour we met, it was the general consensus that our responsibility at this time was to our own communities. The group agreed that under the present pandemic, it was best to "Think globally but act locally".

Members of the group pledged to stay in contact through a WhatsApp group to share ideas and pandemic updates.

7 reasons young people should join Rotary

By Ryan Bell, Iowa City District 6000 Public Image Co-Chair

I have a message for all you young people out there who may never have heard about Rotary. Or if you have, it was from a parent or grandparent who spent more time talking about the lunch menu or how great the salad bar is. If that’s all you’ve heard about Rotary, then you’re missing a lot. And let me tell you why, in the middle of this pandemic, Rotary is more relevant than ever. It’s definitely something you want to know about.

Rotary is kind of a big deal. With over 1.2 million members worldwide, it’s the biggest service organization on the planet. If you’re a fan of the planet, that’s just what Rotary wants to preserve. Our members are working on helping save mothers and children, supporting basic education for children, and fighting diseases. Many of those members are now using their connections and resources to help combat COVID-19.

Rotary has no religious or national affiliation. We don’t care what you believe or who you voted for. The way Rotary sees it, the most important thing is that we come together to accomplish some much-needed tasks for a group we like to call humanity.

Rotary efforts have already helped eradicate 99.9 percent of global cases of polio. If you’ve never heard of polio, you can thank a Rotarian for that. Armed with a massive investment and partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary has taken on the incredible task of ridding the world of this crippling disease so no child need get it ever again.

In addition to these large-scale, international projects, Rotary clubs are always working to improve their own communities. Just check out the list of activities Rotarians are involved in to help their communities get through this pandemic.

I would never pressure you to do something that will improve your life in every conceivable way. But let me tell you the benefits I’ve personally seen from being involved in Rotary for seven years.

COVID-19 #RotaryResponds Telethon

Rotary International is pleased to share with you that we are championing a COVID-19 #RotaryResponds one-hour Telethon to raise critical funds for disaster relief. This telethon will be simulcast on all Rotary International social channels and is anticipated to reach more than 100-thousand viewers with a goal of raising more than $1-million dollars.

Rotary’s 1.2-milion members across the globe have taken swift action. More than $3million dollars from Rotary’s Disaster Relief Fund has already been put into action on the frontlines to battle COVID-19. Additionally, millions more have been raised by our People of Action - they have responded quickly and are truly saving lives. Now, we need to do more and the need for additional funding is a priority.

The Telethon date is Sunday, April 26 th, 2020, 10:00am US Central Daylight Time (Chicago, Illinois). The telethon occurs during International Immunization Week, and will also showcase how our Polio infrastructure is helping to combat COVID-19 in real time.

We will hear stories of hope from Rotarians across the globe as they share with us what they are doing to help their communities. We will hear stories of inspiration from Rotaract, Interact and friends of Rotary.
