1.LONG TERM SOLUTION - Speakers subcommittee. I am asking for three volunteers from the club who will be our speakers subcommittee, responsible for the job of arranging and scheduling speakers. Please let me know if you are willing to step up. This will be a commitment through the end of the year. Of course the subcommittee can continue to get input from members, but the responsibility will be clear instead of falling to nobody, or falling by default to people in the club who aren’t actually responsible for it and are doing plenty of other things . The subcommittee will be part of our club administration committee. The subcommittee can call upon various resources including lists of speakers that the neighboring clubs have used. I’ll hope to get three volunteers. If that does not work, we can think about assigning the job to three people who aren’t Dave or Jim.
2. SHORT TERM SOLUTION: learn from our members. To fill the gaps in our calendar that exist now, I’m calling on members to give a 15-20 minute presentation on something of interest they can share with the club. It does not have to be fancy or have.handouts or a PowerPoint unless you want it to. For example, I can think of a few right now, such as Ten Tips to take better pictures, what do judges really look for in a dance competition, sailor’s guide on how to tell weather from looking at the sky, tips to communicate with a person who has dementia, life lessons from a librarian, what is bee keeping all about, starting a pollinator garden, secrets to traveling like a pro, what life lessons I learned from starting businesses, what you can learn from a former politician about creating consensus. Those are just off the top of my head. To get this rolling, please send me an email with your topics and three good dates (remember, third Fridays are club assembly so don’t pick those) and we will fill in slots. Prize for anyone who is willing to get this kicked off by speaking this Friday!
Dave Schlageter needs help lining up speakers for our meetings, so please send him your ideas for exciting programs.
We are about to start a new year for Rotary. We are always looking for speakers. There are no set rules for the speakers, and we welcome diverse people. If you have anyone in mind, please contact me via e-mail, and we will work to invite them to a meeting.
Where: We meet at the Mequon Public Market, 6300 W Mequon Rd, Mequon, WI 53092. (The entrance is at the rear.)
Next scheduled meeting 10/11/2024
At our meetings, the Greeter will provide either the thought, a Rotary minute, share a family moment or a cultural tradition ... anything with which they would like to start off the day positive.
I’ve been retired for ten years. I’ve been a Rotarian since about 1995 and organized Restoration Of Our Trees Sheboygan circa 2018 as a program of the Sheboygan Rotary Club.
Since then ROOTS has been the keep driver throughout Sheboygan County and eastern Wisconsin in establishing urban reforestation projects involving a unique public-private sector cooperation model.
I have been the Coordinator for this project although am now transitioning my role to a younger member of our Club, Jake Boyer, who will probably accompany me to your meeting if available.
RESTORATION OF OUR TREES SHEBOYGAN (ROOTS)
Restoration of our Trees Sheboygan (ROOTS) is a collaborative effort between Sheboygan Rotary Club and Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership (LNRP) to address the serious threat of the Emerald Ash Borer to Sheboygan County's rich forestry resources. Together with local municipalities, ROOTS is transforming our communities and protecting our beautiful woodlands and tree-lined streets for generations to come.
What did you want to be when you grew up? As I grew up, I always wanted to be a Veterinarian. I worked for the local vet in West Bend for four years as I attended High School. I still love animals to this day. Our family pets currently include: 1 Dog, 1 Cat, 2 Chickens, 2 Hamsters, Fish and a Chinchilla. Over the years, my wife and I have also had a Congo African Grey Parrot, a Hedgehog, Lizards, Sugar Gliders, an Alligator, Guinea Pigs, Mice, Toads and Turtles.
Family: My lovely wife Brandy works as the community involvement & engagement coordinator at Johnson Controls. Together we have two children Brooklyn and Bryce, they are 11 & 9 years old and attend Oriole Lane in Mequon. I have one sister that lives in Germantown with her husband. My parents still live in West Bend and we see each other regularly.
Interests/hobbies/last book read/favorite movie/what’s playing in on your car’s stereo/pastimes: My interest largely falls into two categories: Sports & Travel. My wife and I have been fortunate to travel to over 40 countries since 2010. I believe the experiences I have had traveling have greatly shaped my opinions and personality. I was a four sport athlete in high school and played college football. I serve as Homestead high schools defensive coordinator and take a lot of pride in that. Also, I am an avid Brewers fan.
Career mentor/favorite words of wisdom/role model: “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these” – George Washington Carver
Best business decision, or hardest business decision: Deciding to leave the classroom after 15 years of teaching was very difficult. I was concerned about missing the daily interactions and relationships with the students. Becoming the districts Academic & Career Planning Coordinator was a tough decision, but I am very happy I did. I still have many student interactions regularly and more importantly am able to open some previously closed opportunities for our MTSD students.
This year's Team for the Walk to End Alzheimer's is a combination of all Ozaukee Rotary clubs! We hope that all MT Sunrise club members will join the team or make a donation.
The Walk is on September 28th at Veterans Park in Port Washington.
