Global Partnership for Education Teams Up with Rotary to Advocate for Education

Rotary’s relationship with the Global Partnership for Education is already having an impact, as incoming district governors learned at the International Assembly in January. “Together we are changing the lives of girls and other vulnerable children in the poorest corners of the world,” said Alice P. Albright, the organization’s chief executive officer, in her remarks about the relationship, formed in April 2020. “Rotary has a unique voice and standing on the global stage and in virtually every country. You can use that voice to advocate for more resources and then work with government leaders to ensure that they are distributed equitably.”

GPE is a multi-stakeholder partnership and global fund that facilitates improved outcomes and gender equity in education and supports large-scale changes to education systems around the world. In Rwanda, for example, GPE helped increase access to early childhood education by funding training for more than 5,500 teachers, developing teaching kits and play-based instructional materials, and building 400 schools. In Kenya, the organization helped implement a plan that included making primary education free, which increased enrollment from 72 percent in 2003 to 88 percent in 2012 and closed the gender gap, achieving nearly equal numbers of boys and girls in school. And in Pakistan, GPE provided funding for a distance-learning program that uses social media platforms, as well as radio, TV, and mobile phones, to keep students learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program may even help reach the 19 million children who were not attending school before the pandemic.

Rotary projects around the globe - Korea

Editors Note: This is the second in a series of articles highlighting Rotary projects around the world.

Hiking is a popular pastime in Korea, where more than one-third of citizens polled in 2019 cited sports and fitness as their prime hobby. Rotary clubs in Korea tapped into that mania for the outdoors to raise funds for End Polio Now with the “Hiking the 100 most beautiful mountains challenge” in October and November.

The event engaged 145 climbers from 74 clubs and garnered nearly $106,000 in contributions. Participants — who agreed to personally donate at least $100 each — teamed up, tackled their favorite mountains, and promoted their achievements by posting pictures and comments on social media. “It is possible to celebrate World Polio Day while following the government’s guidelines for social distancing,” noted Ju-Hwa Jeong, Rotary’s End Polio Now coordinator for Korea.

Pukaite Woods Update
Pukaite Woods Update

Christine joined Ozaukee Washington Land Trust (OWLT)  in Fall of 2014 after M-T Sunrise Rotary negotiated a partnership with the City of Mequon and OWLT; created an opportunity to hire a land stewardship intern to help deliver greater environmental care to the Pukaite Woods in Mequon’s Rotary Park.

After completing her undergraduate degree in Conservation and Environmental Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Christine was hired to a full-time position as Project Coordinator for OWLT.   She has also been trained through the National Wildfire Coordinating Group in Wildland Fire Behavior and Firefighter Safety.

Her main focus is administering a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI)  to control invasive species and promote the reestablishment of sustainable, native vegetative communities in southeast Wisconsin and northeast Illinois. In addition, Christine now coordinates woodland restoration work and long-term management planning for Pukaite Woods, guiding Sunrise Rotary's stewardship commitment to the woodland.   Recently, in recognition of her environmental leadership and work with landowners as well as community groups, she was honored with an invitation to join the well-established Friends of Cedarburg Bog Stewardship Committee.
