A Rotary LOL Moment

Frank and Ernest by Thaves

Member Spotlight - Dave Schlageter

I grew up in Evanston Illinois with three brothers. My father was a psychiatrist at Northwestern University hospital downtown Chicago. My mother was a part time travel agent. I went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and graduated with a degree in engineering.

Working since I was 13, I have had a wide variety of jobs, caddy, life guard, warehouse working, orderly at Northwestern, UAW working, ten years in industrial sales, 15 years in medical sales and marketing and 10 years in diabetic footwear. Now I am a professional volunteer with Rotary, Ozaukee Washington Land Trust, Family Promise of Ozaukee County and soon to add EMT for the Mequon Fire Department.

My wife and I have been married for 36 wonderful years and have two great kids, Will who is DC and Anne who is home working 4 jobs and going to school. My favorite vacation was taking the family to New Zealand over Christmas for two weeks. Every day was an adventure.

My first experience with Rotary was about 10 years ago when Terry Schacht convinced me to donate 5 Red Buds and come out and help plant them. It was a typical spring day in Mequon cold and damp. I enjoyed the project and the company. After my circulation returned a year later I joined Rotary. Now I live the dream as a volunteer for great causes.

The World Stopped. They Didn't. (Laura Jennings)

Laura Jennings
Senior services director
Rotary Club of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin

I am the director of support services and activities at the Colonial Club, a nonprofit that provides services to senior adults. Before the coronavirus hit, I scheduled all the programming. We had 20 to 25 programs going on here on any one day. We also delivered hot meals five days a week, and we had 30 to 35 people who came to eat in the building every weekday.

After we closed the building, we weren’t able to do those in-house programs. Now I help with the program to deliver meals. We opened up our meal program to anyone who requested it and who qualifies as a senior. We went from 100 meals a day to almost 160.

To minimize the risk to our drivers and our seniors, we changed our delivery schedule. Instead of delivering a hot meal five days a week, we deliver two meals on Monday and three on Wednesday. We used to have five drivers, but most of them were retirees, and they stopped delivering because of the risk of exposure to the virus. A lot of great people stepped up. Now we have 12 drivers on each day that we deliver. Several of our Rotarians now deliver meals, and our Sun Prairie club donated $2,000 to the meal program. This has been a real community effort.

This has been very difficult for our seniors stuck at home. For many of them, this is where they came to socialize. And we miss having them here. The building is so quiet. I feel we are still helping them, but we want to get them back. I hope that someday soon we’ll return to normal.

Celebrating Foundation Successes

From Foundation Chair Mary Beth Seiser

CONGRATULATIONS!! The 2019-2020 Rotary year was fantastic – and it is all because of YOU and your generosity! Despite the pandemic – or maybe because of it – you all opened your hearts and your hands and your wallets to truly provide Service Above Self.

POLIO - As Rotarians and friends worldwide pitched in, we met the $50 million goal and as a result we received the full $100 million match from the Gates Foundation. The true value in that achievement lies not only in the lives we are saving from the devastation of polio, but it also showed the world that the infrastructure we have in place to fight polio has also been vital in tracking and preventing the spread of Covid-19. Kudos to all of you!

ANNUAL FUND AND ENDOWMENT - We experienced a record year in contributions to the Annual Fund, and in commitments to the Endowment Fund. Generous donations from all of you, and especially from new major donors, benefactors, and bequest society members, help secure our future and guarantee that we will have funding in the future for all the wonderful humanitarian projects we accomplish.

LOCAL BENEFITS - Too often we think of our Service Above Self as taking place in other parts of the world and benefitting people we will never meet. We contribute to the Foundation, and don’t pay attention to where our money goes. This year has reminded us that our contributions truly do come home. In addition to the $61,000+ in district grants, most of which was for projects in your own communities, we also received a $25,000 grant from the foundation for local Covid-19 related projects. You all stepped up and provided PPE’s to health care workers and first responders, you provided food to those in need,  protective equipment for a free clinic, and you filled many other COVID related needs in your own communities.

MILLION DOLLAR JOURNEY - Remember that we are on our Million Dollar Journey to raise funds for the future. Contributions to the Annual Fund will provide us with working dollars in the near future, and commitments to the Endowment fund will provide us with support in years to come. Please think about what you want your Rotary Legacy to be and contact a member of the Foundation committee for more information.

PAT YOURSELVES ON THE BACK! - So, let’s take time to celebrate 2019-2020 and everything that we accomplished. It was a difficult year, and many of us had hard times, but we came through it with flying colors. Now on to 2020-2021! We can’t lose sight of our goal of Service Above Self. Let’s continue to share what we have with those who have less – with those who are struggling – with those who are hopeless. There is so much need, locally and around the world, and we have so much to share. It may be our time – our talents – or our treasures – but we all have something to give.

THANK YOU!
