Teasel Take-out, led by the Interact Club at Homestead High School was an overwhelming success!
Interact succeeded in distributing 2,000 informational door-hangers throughout the community during the first three weeks of April, informing people about the invasive plant and how to eliminate it. Door hangers also invited people to help remove teasel stalks from Oriole Lane School and the wetland across Highland Road from the School on Saturday, April 23.
In honor of Earth Day, 102 volunteers registered and more just showed up and went right to work at Oriole Lane School on Saturday. In three hours, those volunteers cleared last year’s teasel stalks from the entire school yard … front, back, all around … AND, from the neighborhood wetland as well, preparing both sites for herbicide treatment of new plants this spring and/or strategic mowing schedules to keep teasel in check going forward.
The event also fostered new conversations about additional potential projects. While Oriole Lane Cub Scouts and their leaders worked side-by-side with Ozaukee Washington Land Trust staffers, they talked of creating connective pathways to existing nature trails. Using white tape on trees and shrubs, they defined possible paths to work on sometime later this year. Even more exciting, conversations were started that could lead to pursuit of plans and a grant to begin a prairie restoration project for Oriole Lane School yard.
Interact members are very grateful for all the positive response from everyone who supported and volunteered to help make the 2016 Teasel Take-Out successful.
