Thought of the Week

The only fool bigger than the person who knows it all is the person who argues with him. - Stanislaw Jerzy Lec

Member Spotlight - Brian Kendzor

I had the opportunity to grow up in Mequon. I attended Range Line School, Lake Shore School and Homestead between the mid 60’s & late 70’s.

After HS, I choose the opportunity to serve in the US Navy where I learned some very good habits, advanced my education, and traveled the world. It was a very enlightening and memorable experience. I gained book education and life experience simultaneously, which suited me well. Throughout my Navy career I traveled to and lived in many different lands, way too many to list here, but it was a great experience. My last duty station was San Diego, where I planted myself for many years after 14 years of Navy service ended. I made many good friends while in the navy and keep in touch with many of then to this day.

While in San Diego, I attended some medical class at SDSU, architecture and construction management at Mesa Collage and started my first Design/Build Construction Company - American Dream Construction. During this time I was first introduced to Rotary and joined the Coronado Rotary Club. I must say, lunch meetings in the Crown Room at the Hotel Del Coronado was a terrific experience and I have to admit I initially saw Rotary as a networking source for my business and it was. My first international service trip was at this Club where we completed plumbing and electrical in a small village south of the border. That experience was probably my “trigger moment” when I became a Rotarian, and I never looked at Rotary the same again.

The Rotarian - May 2020

Walking into high school for the first time wasn’t easy for Steve Durant. After suffering a stroke at age 14, he used a cane to cope with tremors and a loss of balance. “My first test wasn’t algebra or math. It was walking through the doors of a school with 2,000 people,” says Durant, 36.

Durant suffered a second stroke at 17 — possibly because he carries a sickle cell gene — and struggled with depression. Despite those challenges, he volunteered at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and participated in the Detroit Police Law Enforcement Explorer program and in other service work. In 2001, the Rotary Club of Detroit named him Youth Citizen of the Year. Thus began an enduring devotion to Rotary; Rotarians, in turn, have been there for him when he needed them most.

Bio:

Born in Wisconsin, I moved away, and then returned in 1998. I have worked both in industry (consulting and Xerox Corporation) and in higher education (professor of psychology, management and academic dean).

The Fond du Lac Morning Rotary Club became home and a source of Rotary friends starting in 2000. Travel and international service are passions, along with music, theater, and gardening. My wife Sylvia just retired after years as an institutional researcher and my son Daniel is starting his career as a naturopathic physician.
