Sculpture celebrates nature along Mequon's River Walk
By Jeff Rumage
Mequon - Adding to the natural scenery of Mequon's River Walk is a new city-owned sculpture that was inspired by a Mequon artist's love for nature.
The artist, Susan Falkman, began carving more than 30 years ago in Naxos, Greece. Her work has been shown in galleries in Athens, Carrara, Milan, Chicago, Palm Springs, Indianapolis and Milwaukee. She moved to Mequon 25 years ago, and has created several local pieces in her studio.
The sculpture on the River Walk across from city hall was originally crafted for Joe and Vickie Delgadillo, who had seen her series of sculptures at Boerner Botanical Gardens and wanted a similar sculpture. When the Delgadillos moved out of the city, they decided to donate it to Mequon.
The sculpture was unveiled during the Taste of Mequon festival on Saturday, Sept. 12.
Made from Indiana Limestone, the piece is called "River's Reach" because it represents the flow of nature. The sculpture is evocative of a leaf, wings opening, upward movement and growth, she said.
"My sculpture is a celebration of earth, fire, water, and air, an aesthetic expression of the universal energy that sustains the rhythm of life," she said.
The 700-pound sculpture is 6 feet tall, and is situated on a 2-foot platform. She worked on it intermittently over the course of three months.
