Mequon-Thiensville School District wins big at MATHCOUNTS competition

Mequon - Two plus two recently equated to much more than four for a group of Mequon middle school students.
Math teams from Lake Shore and Steffen middle schools took part in the state MATHCOUNTS competition, a national middle school competitive mathematics program that promotes math achievement through a series of contests.The Lake Shore team placed second overall at the March 5 competition at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on March 5.
Lake Shore student Andrew Wang also edged out fellow Lake Shore student Jake Yasonik to secure a spot at the national MATHCOUNTS competition in Washington D.C. this May.
"We are so proud of the bright young students of Lake Shore and Steffen, as they represented our school district and the Mequon-Thiensville communities in an exemplary manner at this recent competition," said Mr. Matthew Joynt, assistant superintendent for MTSD. "We understand the great benefit there is in supporting opportunities to challenge our students."
The Lake Shore and Steffen teams both qualified for the state competition after their performances at the Greater Milwaukee Chapter competition in Glendale on Feb. 6. There, the Lake Shore team took first and the Steffen team third, with seven out of the top 11 individual performances coming from MTSD students.
Lake Shore's individual qualifiers at state included Wang, Yasonik, Chris Tiako, Jackson Rusch, Ethan Wang and John Han, while additional members of the team were Jonathan Camacho, David Gunn, Michael Pokorny and Jingjing Wang. The team is coached by Kelly Lam.
Individual state qualifiers from the Steffen team were Shubhan Mathur, Chris Panagis, Siggy Van.
Valkenburgh and Erin Wei. Additional members of the Steffen team at state were Jenna Clark, Grayson Eichmeier, Cohen Mleziva, Inga Salsbury, Archish Sridhar and Eric Wan. Derek Pipkorn is the coach of the Steffen team.

IDWEST PETS is a premier training event for Rotary Presidents-Elect. Midwest PETS provides required training to serve as club president, as well as inspiration, and motivation. Midwest PETS is a SEVEN DISTRICT, 300+clubs training event, with an atmosphere of a mini Rotary International convention. Speakers, District Governors-Elect, trainers and facilitators all have one thing in mind: equip and excite club presidents-elect for their year of service.
