Signs approved for Cafe Hollander in Mequon
By Amy Schwabe
Plans for a Mequon eatery moved ahead recently as members of the city planning commission voted in favor of a request made by Cafe Hollander in the Mequon Town Center.
The commissioners' opinions were split over the question of whether to approve requested signage and artwork at the new Cafe Hollander.
The city's office of community development had recommended that the multiple signs requested by the restaurant's owners and Poblocki Sign Company be approved, with the exception of an increase in size to the sign on the building's south elevation.
But assistant director of community development Jac Zader's report recommended a more substantive change to the requested artwork, which includes displays of bicycles evocative of the café's Dutch heritage. Staff felt the artwork made sense in the north elevation of the restaurant. However, the report recommended that commissioners vote for a revised artwork plan which would alleviate clutter by moving the bike art into the restaurant's patio from the south side of the building.
Questions about the requested artwork, as well as a concern by some commissioners that the lights and design of the proposed signs are too "circusy" led to a debate over the commission's role. Several commissioners pointed out that even if the aesthetics of the signs and artwork weren't their taste, their role was to approve anything that is within the code. Alderman Pam Adams also pointed out that, while she normally goes along with staff recommendations, she was reluctant to alter an artist's vision.
