A Rotary LOL Moment

Frank and Ernest by Thaves

Member Spotlight - Alice Sedgwick

I was born and raised on a dairy farm north of Green Bay with 2 older sisters.  We all attended a one-room school and my first job was teaching, also in a one room school wih 35 students in all 8 grades. Quite a challenge! I also taught for several years in Neenah and Mequon.  After completion of a MS in library science, I worked in school and public libraries in Manitowoc and Mequon. This led to my favoirite job as director of the Weyenberg Library of Mequon-Thiensville where I served for 20 years.  It was during this time that I joined the Sunrise Rotary as it fit my work schedule at a busy library.

My family was always involved in our community and Rotary has provided me with a way to follow in their footsteps. I have served on many committees and worked on many Rotary projects both in our club and at the district level.  My greatest Rotary "moments" have been as an Assistant Governor for 5 years and as the Group Leader for a Rotary Group Study Exchange to South Korea in 2001.  I hope to continue my involvement with our Sunrise Rotary and help to keep it an active service organization in our community.

Rotary Park Work Day

Beautiful late-Fall day Saturday, November 2  - 61 Scouts from Pack 3894 and family members, guided by 3 Ozaukee Washington Land Trust Stewards, worked alongside 4 Rotarians to cut & burn buckthorn from the Oak Opening in Rotary Park's Pukaite Woods.

Plans for a Spring workday on May 11, 2019 are in the making to expand the Oak Opening by planting more Oaks in a broader ring around an outdoor classroom.  Mark your calendar to join that workday!

Pukaite Woods Update
Pukaite Woods Update

Christine joined Ozaukee Washington Land Trust (OWLT)  in Fall of 2014 after M-T Sunrise Rotary negotiated a partnership with the City of Mequon and OWLT; created an opportunity to hire a land stewardship intern to help deliver greater environmental care to the Pukaite Woods in Mequon’s Rotary Park.

After completing her undergraduate degree in Conservation and Environmental Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Christine was hired to a full-time position as Project Coordinator for OWLT.   She has also been trained through the National Wildfire Coordinating Group in Wildland Fire Behavior and Firefighter Safety.

Her main focus is administering a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI)  to control invasive species and promote the reestablishment of sustainable, native vegetative communities in southeast Wisconsin and northeast Illinois. In addition, Christine now coordinates woodland restoration work and long-term management planning for Pukaite Woods, guiding Sunrise Rotary's stewardship commitment to the woodland.   Recently, in recognition of her environmental leadership and work with landowners as well as community groups, she was honored with an invitation to join the well-established Friends of Cedarburg Bog Stewardship Committee.
