The speaker committee is seeking your ideas for presentations or speakers to create exciting programs. Please submit your suggestions to them.
We are about to start a new year for Rotary. We are always looking for speakers. There are no set rules for the speakers, and we welcome a diverse group of people. If you have anyone in mind, please contact me via email, and we will work to invite them to a meeting.
My wife Nancy and I moved to Mequon after living in Chicago for over twenty years. While we lovedlife in the Windy City, it was time to be closer to family. My mother still lives in West Bend, while my mother-in-law lives in an assistedliving home in Kenosha. Unfortunately, my father-in-law passed away at 95 years old, but we are grateful to have spent so much time caring for our parents these past few years. We love living at Spur 16; most sunny afternoons I can be found riding mybike on the interurban trail, while evenings often consist of a nice dinner and live music with family and friends. Joining Rotary and theMequon-Thiensville Historical Society has made me feel a part of this vibrant community, and I look forward to becomingeven more involved in the future.
This morning, we are honored to welcome Lucia, who will be sharing her personal journey with Parkinson’s disease and her experience with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery.
Lucia was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2002. Yet, she continued to lead a full and impactful professional life for 17 more years, serving as Dean of the School of Health, Dean of the School of Business, and Vice President at the Mequon campus before retiring in 2014.
For over two decades, she managed her condition with medication—until October and November of last year, when she underwent DBS surgery. This innovative procedure, often compared to a pacemaker for the brain, helps reduce symptoms like tremor, rigidity, and slowness, dramatically improving quality of life.
Lucia’s story is one of resilience, hope, and determination. Today, she will give us a firsthand look into the challenges of Parkinson’s, the DBS surgical process, and the remarkable improvements she has experienced since.
We are excited that our Club voted to build an All-user Playground in Mequon at Mequon Rotary Park. This is a joint project with the Thiensville-Mequon Noon Rotary Club.
On Saturday, September 6, our two clubs are volunteering at Taste of Mequon for 2-hour shifts to educate the community about Rotary and the playground. Please sign up for a shift by clicking here: https://www.signupgenius.com/
