Proposed solution to Mequon sign code dilemma not sitting well with some aldermen

By Lisa Curtis - Special to the News Graphic

MEQUON — The city of Mequon’s ongoing scrutiny into whether it can restrict the public from putting signs on cityowned properties has yielded one proposed solution that is causing much angst among aldermen, and will likely lead to many more difficult decisions going forward.

Based on a review from a private attorney hired by the city to provide guidance on the issue, City Attorney Brian Sajdak, Mequon Mayor John Wirth and city staff worked to create a proposed ordinance. Included in the language, and of particular interest by Common Council members, is a “free zone” for political and other signs on the corner of Cedarburg and Mequon roads, just north of the city’s prized gateway structure.

By one city official’s estimate, there could be as many as 50 signs in the area during an election season.

“I just am very uncomfortable with the location of it,” said Alderwoman Kathleen Schneider, adding that it breaks her heart. “Given the potential size (of the signs), it’s a concern to me that it would really destroy something we worked really hard to build.”

Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation release position statement on COVID-19 vaccination

As the first organization to envision a polio-free world through mass immunization of children, Rotary believes the decision to vaccinate is a humanitarian imperative. The Rotary International Board of Directors and Rotary Foundation Trustees believe that:

  1. Global vaccination is the path to ending the pandemic, and we strongly encourage vaccination for all individuals, including our members.
  2. Misinformation hinders the fight against COVID-19, and we are committed to providing our members with science-based information.
  3. Rotary is engaged in assuring equity in vaccine access to all people. Through joint efforts with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance we are leveraging our frontline experience with polio to facilitate vaccine delivery.
  4. Rotary salutes health care workers everywhere as they continue to provide lifesaving services. We encourage clubs to offer recognition and encouragement to these heroes.
  5. Rotary and Rotaract clubs are encouraged to redouble their efforts to support COVID-19 prevention and vaccination efforts.
  6. As one of the greatest advances of modern medicine, vaccines are safe, effective and save millions of lives each year. They have eliminated or controlled numerous diseases such as polio, smallpox, measles, and Ebola, and now, there is the opportunity to end the COVID-19 pandemic through vaccination.
  7. The eradication of polio remains the goal of the highest order for Rotary. We can continue to apply the lessons we have learned in fighting polio to COVID-19 response efforts.
Rotary projects around the globe - Nigeria

Editors Note: This is the sixth in a series of articles highlighting Rotary projects around the world.

District 9110 Rotaractors teamed up to deliver pantry staples and toiletries to a correctional facility in Ogun state. Members of the Rotaract clubs of Iju-Ishaga and Ijebu-Ife, with support from a Rotaract district committee, organized the distribution of goods, which included beans, cassava flour, packaged water, tissue, bathroom slippers, toothpaste, toothbrushes, detergent, and soap.

Afterward, the Rotaractors served meals at a nearby shelter that houses people in need.

Also taking part in the effort were the Rotaract clubs of Abeokuta, Lekki Phase 1, and Ota.

Mequon Community Foundation

Lori Lorenz, the president of Mequon Community Foundation (MCF), is excited to bring the most recent news of MCF to the Sunrise Rotary Club. MCF’s all-volunteer board has been helping enhance the quality of life in our community since 1999. Places you go and events you attend in the community often are recipients of MCF grants. Their impact is far and wide in the areas of recreation, education, culture, outdoor beautification, public safety and general public improvement.

Lori will tell you about the impact MCF has had in the community and their plans for the future.  She also looks forward to engaging with you as to what you would like to see in our community going forward and how you can get involved in seeing those dreams become a reality.

Lori started her new role as president in May 2021, having served as treasurer of MCF since 2017. As a retired CPA (Arthur Andersen/RSM McGladrey), Lori is passionate about serving others through the Mequon Community Foundation, Fox Point Lutheran Church, the UW-Whitewater Foundation Board, Gems of Hope WI Executive Board and other organizations.  She also volunteers as an accounting consultant for local start-ups and non- profits.

Lori and her husband, Eric, are Wisconsin natives and moved to Mequon in 1984. Although work took them out of the area from 1998-2008, they could not wait to return in 2009 and have been enjoying the new amenities continually being added to their lovely city of Mequon since then.

In addition to her volunteer work, Lori enjoys golfing, tennis, hiking, boating up north and spending time with her three married children and four beautiful grandchildren.
