What It's Like To: Receive a kidney from a friend

Editor's Note: This is the fifth annual appearance of What It’s Like, a proven favorite with readers inside and outside Rotary. - The Rotarian

Sterling Gaston - Rotary Club of Fishkill, New York

I have polycystic kidney disease. My brother and I inherited it from our mother, who died from it. It can cause high blood pressure and aneurysms, both of which I’ve had. My nephrologist said, “If you pay attention to what I tell you and eat what I tell you and take the following prescriptions, you’ll get 15 years out of those kidneys before you start having trouble.” Well, I followed what she said and sure enough I did get 15 years. But then I started having trouble. I had a series of kidney stones, and then CAT scans found hundreds of little cysts on my kidneys. So seven years ago, I got myself on the donor list. I knew I had to nurse these puppies and hope I would get a donor before things got really bad.

Several years ago, Julie approached my wife, Chris, about being the donor. It was at the Christmas party for the Fishkill club. I could see them talking over on the other side of the room. But you know, it’s a social thing. And we were all good friends, so it was no big deal. Chris asked her, “Why are you coming to me rather than Sterling?” Julie said, “Because I know him. If I go to him and say, ‘I’m going to do this,’ he’s going to say, ‘No, Julie, just cool it. I’m on the donor list.’” And she was probably right. So the two of them ganged up on me. That’s how we wound up doing it.

DOT plans to expand I-43 to three lanes in each direction between Glendale and Grafton

By: Jeff Rumage, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The reconstruction and expansion of I-43 in the North Shore is moving forward, with construction slated to begin as early as 2021.

The state Department of Transportation will share project plans and answer questions during two open-house-style meetings.

The first meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Mequon City Hall. The second meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Nicolet High School.

The reconstruction plans were approved by the Federal Highway Administration in November 2014, but the project funding was not authorized by the State Legislature until July 2019.

The DOT is preparing an environmental re-evaluation to address any changes that might have occurred in the past five years. After the re-evaluation is finished, the DOT will begin final engineering and plan preparations.

Construction may start as early as 2021 and is expected to be completed by 2025.

Throwing Down the Gauntlet - 1/9/2020 Update

I just wanted to provide an update regarding the competition between clubs.

Halfway Point Club Contribution Report:

  • Sunrise $1,856
  • Noon $3,719

Although it appears the Noon Club is running away with this, with no sign of letting up, this is all the more reason for a few Sunrise Club members to step in to close the gap. The Noon Club should be aware that the Sunrise Club may also be holding back for a last minute push for the title.

"I have a person-centered approach that meets people where they are at. I individualize care to help meet people's goals by using a mixture of education and evidence-based therapeutic approaches as needed to foster change. My background in positive psychology and resilience focuses on people's strengths to not only survive, but thrive."

I earned my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and Master's of Science in Clinical Psychology from the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology. I also received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Marquette University. I completed a psychology internship at Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), and also completed Master Resiliency Training from the U.S. Army.

I have been in the U.S. Army since 2007: five years active duty and six years and counting in the Reserves. My focus is treating trauma, moral injury, and working with a military population which includes individual, couple, and group therapy. I utilize a number of evidence based modalities (CPT, PE, EMDR, ACT, CBT) in addition to an interpersonal style to treat trauma related disorders.

I am also competent in treating anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, serious mental illness, and relationship problems. I have extensively studied barriers for veterans accessing mental healthcare and have a strong background in motivational interviewing.

I have a beautiful wife and three amazing children. We also have a dog, two cats, two birds, and many fish. Chickens are on the horizon. Outside of work, I enjoy playing, coaching, and watching sports... in that order. I play everything from volleyball to bowling to basketball to ping pong. If it has a ball, I will probably enjoy it. I also love spending time with my kids, traveling (when possible), the theatre, and trying new foods.
