Spelling Bee Raises $23K for Adult Literacy Center of Ozaukee County (ALC)

Adult Literacy Center of Ozaukee County Rides Wave of Success at Back to the BEEach

(Grafton, WI) – A crowd of beachcombers and intrepid spellers created an exciting evening on May 3 at Back to the BEEach, the annual spelling bee benefit for the Adult Literacy Center of Ozaukee County (ALC). Six teams competed for the coveted Spelling Bee trophy, while helping raise money for ALC’s individualized free tutoring programs.  More than 120 people watched returning champs, the David Has-Spell-offs, take the win with the word xenogamy at the Ozaukee Nonprofit Center in Grafton. The second place team was the Spell-icans from Grace Lutheran Church-ELCA.

“Each year, we’re amazed at the creativity of the teams and guests who embrace the benefit theme,” says ALC Board President Josh Branham. “More importantly, we are deeply grateful to the generosity of participants and sponsors who helped raise more than $23,000 in support of our tutors and students.”

Since 2017, the ALC has hosted the spelling bee benefit, sponsored by local businesses and community organizations.  This year’s major sponsors were Insurance Innovations, Sommer’s Automotive group and community leaders Jan and Bob Blazich.  O’Leary Guth Law Offices and KKomfort each sponsored a team, while Dr. Gary Walters of Ozaukee Eye Care gave a generous gift to kick off the event mission appeal. Lead gifts by Coerper Mauer Foundation, Levy & Levy Attorneys at Law, O’Connor Wealth Management, Port Washington State Bank, and Shaffer Development helped spur individual donors to exceed the goal, contributing more than $9,000 to the overall monies raised.

“Benefits take many volunteers and helping hands,” says ALC Executive Director Amy Schmelzer. “We were fortunate to have had a committee and board that took charge of different elements to make the event a success.  I am indebted to everyone who helped make the event possible.”

The mission of the Adult Literacy Center of Ozaukee County (ALC) is to provide individualized educational services for adult learners to improve academic and life skills in order to pursue their personal, professional, and life goals. Founded in 1988, the ALC began as a mission of Grace Lutheran Church in Grafton and became an independent nonprofit 501(c)3 organization in 2013.

REQUEST FOR DONATIONS

Fellow Rotarians,
I volunteer at the food pantry of the Jim Luther New Hope Center.  The Center has a food distribution and a food cooperative program. In the food distribution, they serve 4,000 families each year with an emergency short-term supply of food. The food cooperative program is a communal program that's designed to help feed families while also empowering community leaders to take action in their own lives and invest in the neighborhood.  Located at 1414 W. Becher Street, off I-94 near downtown Milwaukee, they are open Tuesday from 12:30 - 2:30 pm and Wednesday from 4:00 - 6:00 pm.

I usually help  with the intake process and in many cases I am able to assist people whose  English is not their first language.  I recently became aware of the need for several items listed bellow.
If you are able, please donate any of these items.  We will collect items on May 10 and May 17. Meet us at the parking lot.

  • Toilet paper
  • shampoo (12-18 oz.)
  • deodorant
  • small sized dish soap

  • lotion (8-12 oz.)
  • regular and super tampons
  • used suitcases with rollers

The center is also in need for volunteers for Wednesday’s activities. I encourage you to consider the possibility of volunteering, the experience and the obvious gratitude of the people we help is very humbling and rewarding. To learn more about volunteering, please contact Ann Luba at 414-909-9223 abutlerluba@gmail.com

Thank you.,
Lucia and McKenna
