Culture: Dinner for one

From the April 2016 issue of The Rotarian

There is a new ritual in American life. It goes like this: Whenever you invite someone to dinner, you must inquire about any special dietary needs. Because today, it seems that nearly everyone has drawn a line around foods that cannot pass their lips.

This could be because of allergies, moral qualms, lifestyle choices, health issues, or simple preference. The person might be a vegetarian who eats fish, a carnivore who hates carbs, a glutton who avoids gluten, or a time bomb waiting to be set off by a nut. (Asking ahead makes for a more pleasant evening than calling an ambulance.)

Hospitalization aside, one reason for this shift has been the moralization of food. Our dining choices have become identity choices, a way of saying, “This is the kind of person I am,” or “This is the kind of world I want to live in.”

This is a luxury of our age. The hunters, villagers, and small bands of Homo sapiens in times past would have thought it extremely strange, and possibly hostile, to assert one’s preferences in this manner.

Mequon, Shorewood performers join Kids From Wisconsin Troupe
By Ty Schmidt

Two local performers have joined the Kids from Wisconsin Troupe, which is back for their 48th show season with a talented group of 33 kids representing 29 different hometowns across Wisconsin.

Bridget Cushman of Shorewood and Grace Bobber of Mequon are joining this year's tour, which seeks to embody the theme "Sing!"

Performing live annually for more than 120,000 across Wisconsin and the Midwest, the Kids from Wisconsin presents great entertainment with some of Wisconsin's most talented performers ages 15-20. The revue is produced in collaboration with some of the country's best writers, arrangers, and choreographers.

The KIDS maintain a broad repertoire of music that includes the American favorites, big band, 50s- 80s classics, Motown, country, Broadway and current top hits, filling a two hour fully staged performance.

"It is a gift to be able to bring the KIDS to their hometowns to 'sing,'" Executive Director Tina Weiss said. "Having a hometown KID in the Kids from Wisconsin is very exciting for these communities, and something to be proud of."

Thirty three of Wisconsin's most talented young performers, along with 10 camp alternates were chosen during statewide auditions in February. The troupe is comprised of 20 singers/dancers and a 13-piece show band.

"Enjoying and participating in the KIDS experience has had a positive impact on the lives of our 900 alumni and the nearly 5 million audience members inspired by our performances for nearly 50 years," Weiss said.

The following is a list of performances planned for the Milwaukee area:

  • 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, Nathan Hale High School
