Good morning Rotarians!

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful week, I look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow.

As we prepare to reset and recharge for another Rotary year, please take a moment to review your Rotary to-do list. Summer is upon us and many things compete for our time, weekends challenge us and force us to make choices between multiple things we would like to do, weekdays somehow seem longer with the daylight, but pass quickly with a flurry of activities.

Consider your "why" for Rotary, why did you join and why do you stay, why do you get up every Friday morning to come to our meeting... Then make some time in your schedule to be a Rotarian. It's the activity of Rotarians that make Rotary so awesome. So ask yourself, " What have I done for Rotary today?"

I encourage everyone to decide, right this moment, one thing your going to do every week for Rotary this year; chair a committee, volunteer to help on a service project or social event or better yet, plan a service project or social event, research and present a fresh, new fundraising (or fun-raising) idea, take a "new" Rotarian to lunch, etc. Your a leader in our community, so lead!

HOMEWORK: Write down your first idea on a slip of paper and bring it to the meeting this week,  I'll be collecting the at the door. Don't forget or you may need to anwser to the Sargent at Arms.

The Mequon/Thiensville Rotary Clubs announced on Saturday June 6th that their joint pledge of $100,000 towards the completion of the Rotary Riverwalk has been satisfied.  The announcement was made at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Mequon/Thiensville Sunrise Rotary Club held at Mequon Rotary Park.

The Riverwalk project was chosen by local Rotarians to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Rotary International in 2005 and was started in 2004.  It was part of the Town Center Plan implemented by the two communities.  Fundraising, grant writing, and construction have taken place since that time.

Special thanks were extended to the members of the Thiensville/Mequon Rotary Club and the Sunrise Rotary Club, along with members of the joint Riverwalk Committee overseeing the project.  Key roles were also played by the City of Mequon, the Village of Thiensville and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.  Recognition was also given to private property owners who provided easements along with the residents of both communities who have generously supported the fundraising efforts of both clubs to help with the completion of this pledge.  Major donors were also recognized, including Greg Huffman.

The public is invited to enjoy the Rotary Riverwalk which has portions completed along or near the river extending from Thiensville Village Park for 1.3 miles to Mequon Road.

Centennial Bar and Grille closes, makes room for new Sobelman's in Mequon
By Jeff Rumage

Mequon - After 27 years in business, Brian Ruelle has decided to close Centennial Bar and Grille.

The restaurant at the corner of Port Washington and Donges Bay roads known for its barbeque pork ribs, friendly staff and cozy atmosphere will serve its last meal on June 20, when Ruelle will hand over the keys to Dave Sobelman, who plans to turn the building into his third Sobelman's Pub and Grill.

The Centennial broke the news on its Facebook page Saturday, June 13, and has since seen an outpouring of support in the comments section. Many Centennial regulars have stopped in over the last couple of days to say their final goodbyes as well.

"If I knew people liked me that much maybe I wouldn't have sold," Ruelle joked.

Ruelle, a Mequon resident, knows full well the value of the friendships he has formed since August 1988, when he purchased the building from the owners of the Donges Bay Inn. He and his business partners decided to name the restaurant The Centennial because of the history of the building, which is now about 117 years old. At 57 years old, Ruelle said he is not interested in retiring, but opening a new chapter in his career.

"I was starting to get a little antsy," he said. "When Dave expressed interest, I thought, 'Let's see where this goes.' I think I am capable of doing something else."

Katie Bjerning, the front of the house manager at Centennial, said the staff and customers have become like a family to her over the last 10 years.

"It's exciting because it's new, and we're hoping it will be fun, but this is definitely a hard change," she said.

All Centennial employees will have the opportunity to continue working at the new Sobelman's North Shore restaurant. Sobelman, who lives in Bayside, said business is booming at his two existing locations, and he looks forward to serving his famous burgers and Bloody Marys to his North Shore neighbors.

Sobelman said he loves the look and feel of the bar room at Centennial, and he doesn't plan to make many changes to the interior before opening in mid-July.

"That room is so perfect for what we do," Sobelman's said. "Someone told me that the space there is more like Sobelman's than the original Sobelman's on Saint Paul."
