Thought of the Week

It is a little dark still, but there are warnings of the day and somewhere out of the darkness, a bird is singing to the Dawn. - Excerpt from Representative American Negroes, an essay by Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Rotary responds to earthquake that has devastated areas of Turkey and Syria

Turkey and Syria were struck by a devastating earthquake on 6 February that has killed tens of thousands of people, destroyed thousands of homes and other structures, and left people across the region without shelter in bitterly cold winter weather.

The Rotary world responded to this catastrophe immediately. RI President Jennifer Jones activated our disaster response efforts, communicated with the affected districts, and encouraged governors in those regions to apply for disaster response grants and share information about their relief efforts so that Rotary can amplify the calls for support.

The Rotary Foundation Trustees decided that all donations made, from now until 31 March, to the Turkey/Syria Disaster Response Fund will be used to aid earthquake relief projects. In addition, the Trustees made available more than $125,000 to Rotary districts affected by the earthquake through Disaster Response Grants.

Rotary's project partner ShelterBox also has an emergency response team assessing the needs in the region and how it can respond. That team is communicating with Rotary district leaders. Rotary's service partner Habitat for Humanity International is also working on its response. Many Rotary members are asking how they can help. Here's how to have the greatest impact:

  • Give to Turkey/Syria Disaster Response Fund. Donations help clubs and districts provide aid and support rebuilding efforts where the need is greatest. The funds are distributed to affected communities through disaster response grants. The Disaster Response Fund can accept cash contributions and District Designated Funds (DDF).
  • Support local initiatives. As we learn about local response efforts that are being led by clubs and districts, Rotary raises awareness about how to support them. People can then support these projects by working directly with Rotary members in the region. If you want us to publicize information about local response efforts, write to relief@rotary.org.

Rotary projects around the globe - Malaysia

While Malaysia’s citizens are among the most proficient English speakers in Asia, a gap persists between people in urban and rural areas. The country has pushed in recent years to increase English literacy because of its role in the global economy.

Shortly after it was chartered in 2015, the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl began working to reduce the disparity, says Noni Said, a club past president who inaugurated Project REAL. By 2020, the club’s initiative operated in 16 rural schools in Sabah state, benefiting some 4,000 students by providing teacher training, books, and equipment. A committee including Rotarians visits schools and meets quarterly with education leaders to monitor progress. Project REAL attracted early financial support from philanthropic organizations and the Australian Embassy.

New partnerships with Rotary members in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and in Taiwan have enabled the club to expand the project to an additional 18 schools.

The Redress Movement
The Redress Movement

The Redress Movement is an emerging racial justice organization that aims to organize racially and ethnically diverse local movements in communities throughout the U.S.  We will help residents to build and wield collective power needed to redress residential segregation of their own and neighboring communities.

We believe that just as segregation was caused by specific laws, specific policies and specific decision makers, segregation and its multi-generational impacts can be redressed. Our vision is a society no longer divided and separated.

While we know that segregation that took decades to establish cannot be undone overnight, we are determined to take the first steps on an unwavering path to redress it as a moral and constitutional obligation.

Bio:

Originally from rural Illinois, Brittany has called the Greater Milwaukee Area homebase for the past 16 years. After graduating from UW-Milwaukee with a double major in Global Studies and Spanish, she was selected as one of 26 volunteers for the inaugural cohort to the Republic of Kosovo with the Peace Corps serving as an ESL instructor for two years.

She began her organizing career volunteering to knock doors and ask voters about the issues that mattered most to them. She was serving as the Financial Director in the home stretch of a Wisconsin Supreme Court race when the COVID pandemic hit. Nationwide, campaigns turned to digital organizing and physically-distant outdoor events. Likewise Brittany went on to work for several local races and coordinated campaigns focusing on digital organizing, car rallies, and literature drops to help turn out the vote in the fall of 2020.

That same year, she founded Break the Silence in the Burbs (BSB) to create a space in Milwaukee suburbs to amplify BIPOC voices and for residents to show up in solidarity with demands for justice for victims of police brutality and call for systemic change. In partnership with allied and Black-led organizations, BSB co-organized dozens of marches, community conversations, and direct-actions including letter writing campaigns to state legislators and school boards in support of anti-racist policies.

Brittany looks forward to helping the Redress Movement create an inclusive, multiracial coalition reflective of the Greater Milwaukee Area to effectively redress the legacy of racial segregation and advance housing justice in southeatern Wisconsin.
