Member Spotlight - Seth Duhnke

My family:  I grew up on the east side near UWM. I have also lived in Chicago and Scottsdale, AZ. Currently, I live in Grafton with my wife, Cecile. She is the director at C.O.P.E. and my daughter Grace. We also have a daughter and granddaughter in Phoenix.

Education: I have a degree in human resources from Ottawa University and studied philosophy and economics, too.

First Job: I always thought I would be a forest ranger when I grew up. I guess I never grew up since that never happened. My first real job was a clerk and Sentry Foods on Downer Avenue.

Hobbies and interests: I love hiking up mountains, boating, and going to concerts. I love urban areas, two weeks ago I drove down to Chicago and walked 14.7 miles had dinner and came right home. Frank Sinatra’s Live at the Sands with Count Basie last played in my car. I have never had a ticket or accident and I believe I am the only person to see Eminem and Duke Ellington in concert.

I cannot name just one favorite movie. Here are ten that come to mind;

  • The Godfather
  • Fargo
  • Talk to Her
  • The Maltese Falcon
  • Schindler’s List
  • Some Like it Hot
  • Singing in the Rain
  • Casablanca
  • On the Waterfront
  • Dr. Strangelove

I just read Candice Millard’s Hero of the Empire The Boer War a Daring Escape and the Making of Winston Churchill.

I once won a sales contest that gave me a trip to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. My current job always keeps me busy. I just wish I could lower the stress.

Suppose I were to do it all over again. I would hope that I would not be afraid to invest in myself. I love the quote from Immanuel Kant “Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time an end”.

Most memorable Rotary moment: The best thing I ever heard a Rotary Meeting was shortly after the 2004 Indonesian Tsunami I heard a second hand account of a man who had lost his entire family in the flood and was minutes away from doing himself in when saw an emaciated child wandering the streets. He thought to himself I have to get this kid to his parents and then I will kill myself. Well, he never did find them. He kept that child, adopted seven others, and raised them all.

Parting thought: A man or woman must have a purpose, and Rotary gives me purpose.

Speaker Friday- Steve Peterman

Darcy and I celebrated our 55th anniversary last summer.
We are blessed with three grown children in their 40's and 50's.

Our daughter, Cheryl, is a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital and lives in Mequon. She is engaged to be married in June to a gentleman from Homestead HS that she dated 35 years ago. Dave is a Flight for Life nurse, so they have much in common.

Our oldest son, Mark, has a construction company and lives in Cedarburg. His wife, Kate, is also a nurse.

Our youngest son, Scott, works at Patrick Space Force Base in Cocoa Beach and lives in Merritt Island, Florida. His wife, Jessica, has worked for both NASA and the Air Force as Civilian Air Force. She has just been hired as a Civilian Air Force and will assist the rocket launches again.

We are also blessed with four grandchildren. Abby and Luke live in Cedarburg. Stevie and Caroline live in Florida.

I grew up in Glendale and graduated from Nicolet High School. That is where I took my first architectural course and fell in love with architecture. I ended up working full time in the profession of architecture for over 50 years. During that time, I worked as a draftsman for two different firms, as the sole principal of my own firm, and as a partner in two other firms. My partner and I sold our architectural firm at the end of 2016, finally allowing me to retire.

We have lived in Mequon for 54 years, and I have tried to stay active in our community during that time. I am extremely proud to be a charter member of our great  Rotary Club. The past 34 years have gone by quickly. It is interesting to think back 34 years when a group of us got together to discuss the possibility of starting a new Rotary Club. None of us in that room, except for one person from the noon club, knew anything about Rotary. We were on a big learning curve. And learn, we did. Even though those other charter members are no longer with the club, they set the bar high. They were hard-working professionals who quickly understood how Rotary could benefit our community and the world. Our club is as strong as it has ever been and is well respected in our community. Keep up the good work!
Previous Speaker - Steve Fine

Last week, Steve Fine gave a very engaging and informational presentation regarding the dangers of melanoma and the importance of early detection, especially in young people.

Steve Fine - Founder and President of the Melanoma Education Foundation

Steve Fine, founder and president of the Melanoma Education Foundation, attended colleges in the Boston area, receiving a doctorate in chemistry from Northeastern University. He then moved to Pennsylvania, completing a year of postdoctoral research at Lehigh University. After 5 years as Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, he moved back to New England where he served in technical and management positions in high tech chemical companies. In 1989 he started a consulting practice in the technology of high purity chemical manufacturing, concurrently serving for 3 years as Vice President of Technology for ACSI, a West Coast manufacturer of semiconductor chemicals. Shortly after his son, Dan, died of melanoma in 1998 at the age of 26, he founded the non-profit Melanoma Education Foundation and, since 2000, has devoted full time to the Foundation. The primary activity of the Foundation has been educating high school and middle school wellness teachers about melanoma and providing them with free online lessons to educate their students about self-detecting melanoma while it is curable. Prior to the Covid 19 pandemic over 1700 schools in all 50 U.S. states and Canada were using the lessons, resulting in saved lives of students, teachers and their loved ones.
Annual holiday gift-giving program

Friday 12/13 is the last day to bring gifts for our Family Promise families.

Plan B is to donate to the drive using VENMO  @JenniferQuinnies
Using VENMO for Jennifer to buy gift cards will take you about 30 seconds!!

Our club's annual holiday gift-giving program is an opportunity for you to personally and positively influence the lives of two families in our community.

This year, we are once again partnering with Family Promise.
We will need some help after this Friday's Rotary meeting to wrap the gifts we've collected as a club for the families that we are supporting through Family Promise.

We could use the following (please bring on Friday):

* Wrapping paper & Gift bags of all sizes (I have tape and scissors)

* There are still a few gift items that haven't been chosen yet. Besides gift cards, we still need a Jurassic World Indominous Rex toy, Tonie Box Audio Player, Clothes for Vela 18 months size, Wednesday Adams item, and hunting stuff for dad, Justin. Please take another look at the wish list if you might be able to help! We are soooooo close!

* The two moms, Katie & Elizabeth, didn't ask for much. Perhaps you might even have some items at home that are new with tags on that they might enjoy? (warm winter socks, body wash/lotion, nail polish, assorted tea or hot cocoa, jewelry, etc.). Gift cards are definitely needed, but it is always fun to open something that they can use right away.

^^^^ Feel free to share this link with friends, co-workers, family, etc.

I can do the shopping for you if you don't want to! You can Venmo me @JenniferQuinnies
Just let me know the item(s) you want me to purchase and consider it done!

I look forward to seeing you all bright and early this Friday morning.
