Our next meeting will be Friday (2/8) at Newcastle Place, 12600 N. Port Washington Road, Mequon, WI  53092.

Friday's program will feature our own Matt Wolf who will facilitate a continued discussion on growth and development for Mequon-Thiensville Rotary and service organizations as a whole.

The greeter will provide either the thought, a Rotary minute, share a family moment or a cultural tradition ... anything they would like to start off the day positive.

Member Spotlight -  Chad Winterfield

Family: Jenn and I will be married 16 years this year. My son, Declan, is 12. My daughter, Rowan, is 8. Tonka is our 4 year old bullmastiff. We’ve been in Mequon for the last 7 years since moving up from Chicago.

Interests/hobbies/last book read/favorite movie/what’s playing in on your car’s stereo/pastimes: Lately, my biggest hobby seems to be falling asleep, but I do at least pretend I still have other interests. I see a fair amount of live music. An acoustic Metallica cover of Bob Seger’s Turn the Page is playing as I write this. I’ve seen both in the past few months.

I like to explore. I like to travel, though we don’t get to far flung places with the kids being in the stage of life they are. We did go to Pittsburgh in December, which is a lot like Bill’s trip to Patagonia, except the mountains are slush covered and the waters are a pristine shade of brown.

Almost all of my time is spent on the kids and work these days. Though, I am happy to say the balance is shifting more toward the former. I’m a team manager for Destination Imagination, which is a pretty nifty STEAM program that competes globally. Our regional competition is in March.

Most important lesson that you've learned in business?: It’s still about relationships. Being planful helps, but winds change, especially in client-driven environments. Being a good partner and establishing real connections with people helps you navigate challenging times in addition to the rewards those things bring all by themselves.

Career mentor/favorite words of wisdom/role model: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

Most memorable Rotary moment or event?: Still setting Pukaite Woods on fire with Tom Aranow.

Your favorite vacation?: We spend time in the Outer Banks of North Carolina every summer. It’s a mellow, relaxing way to say goodbye to the summer months.

Bowl for Kids' Sake

Save the date, March 15 to participate and cheer our Rotary teams on Friday, March 15 "Bowl for Kids' Sake" at Harbor Hills Recreation Center in Port Washington!  Food will be catered by Atlas BBQ that evening.  Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm and bowling starts at 7:15 pm.  It's fun!

The night will include bowling, a 50-50 raffle, a "Restaurant Wheel" ($5 to win a chance for gift cards to local restaurants), a live auction, and bowling teams can buy a "Red Pin Challenge" for $5 each or $20/team to have a chance to win a prize for getting a strike whenever a red pin is the head pin.  If you don't bowl, it's OK to come and cheer on our Rotary teams!!  A special prize will be awarded to the "Best 70s Team"...groovy, man!...so think of a name and what to where from the 70s!!  Fun!

Club President Bobby Fisher (pictured left) accepts a Rotary flag Brian Monroe (pictured right) brought back from his recent visit to Providenciales.

Providenciales, known locally as Provo, is an island in the Turks and Caicos archipelago, in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s ringed by soft, sandy beaches, many of them on the north coast. These include expansive Grace Bay Beach, a water sports hub with resorts, shops and restaurants. The island's snorkel sites include Smith’s Reef and Bight Reef.

Introduce Himself

James would like to be the next Ozaukee County Judge because it provides an opportunity to serve the people of Wisconsin again, and his experience equips him to succeed.  He has broad experience, and sound conservative judgment.

James is a Shareholder at von Briesen & Roper, s.c., advising businesses on mergers and acquisitions, negotiations, supply-chain alternatives and risk management.  On a pro bono basis, James represents participates in Legal Action Wisconsin’s Eviction Defense Project.   

James has developed reforms to our justice system to enhance protection of the community and achieve superior outcomes.  For Governor Tommy G. Thompson and Scott McCallum, James generated initiatives and advised them on criminal justice, the courts, veterans and military affairs, and homeland security. He served on the Governor’s Task Force on Terrorism Preparedness, Pardon Advisory Board, Law Enforcement and Crime Commission, and Juvenile Justice Commission.  

James worked for two Wisconsin judges. As clerk to Justice Wilcox, James provided counsel on pending cases and prepared drafts of opinions.  As a clerk for Judge Dreyfus, James assisted with the operation of a court focused on civil matters.

Outside of work, James is active at his parish, St. Eugene.  He recently wrapped up serving as Chair of the Pastoral Council, and is now focused on St. Eugene’s upcoming auction.  During the week, James is a longtime volunteer at the Open Door Café Meal Program at St. John’s Cathedral. 

James grew up in the North Shore of Milwaukee, and now lives in Mequon with his wife Val.  They have two children, and are fostering a third that they hope to adopt. James attended Marquette High School, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Marquette Law School.
