Rotary Moment - Lynn Streeter

Where were you born and raised? I was born in New York City and raised in Mount Kisco, New York, a village of approximately 12,000 people located an hour north of the city. My father was an oral surgeon, and my mother was a pediatric nurse. Both were active volunteers in our community.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I grew up with a strong connection to the medical community. My first volunteer role was in our local community hospital. I made the decision to become an Occupational Therapist when I was in high school. I believe that serving in health care is both a calling and a privilege. I have been fortunate to have served the community of southeast Wisconsin for over 40 years.

What is your formal education? I received my undergraduate degree in Occupational Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis. I interned in adolescent and adult mental health as well as pediatric rehabilitation. It was my mental health internship that brought me to Wisconsin. My graduate degree is in Administrative Leadership and Adult Education from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee. I was granted an honorary Nursing Degree by the Columbia College of Nursing.

Tell us about your family? Scot and I will celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary this September. His mother, sister, and brother-in-law all live here in Mequon. I am the oldest of three children. My sister’s family lives in New Hampshire, and my brother’s family lives in New York.

How do you spend your time now that you are retired? Scot and I both love to travel, visiting over 30 countries and have been fortunate in the many adventures that we have experienced. As many of you know, Scot is a beekeeper and has engaged me in his hobby! In conjunction with my love of gardening, we have a shared interest in pollinators and nature activities. We like visiting Wisconsin parks, hiking trails, and kayaking the waterways.

I have been an active community volunteer since I was 14. It has been both an evolving and continuous part of my life. In retirement, my volunteer activities have brought me closer to our community. I am honored to be a member of the Boards of Directors for the Mequon Thiensville Community Foundation and the Southern Ozaukee Fire and Emergency Services Department. Over the next two years, I anticipate a significant time commitment to developing the Rotary All-User Playground.

Pollinator Garden Help
Next week, Tuesday, July 23 @ 5 pm
we will meet at Rotary's Pollinator Gardens

to take down the fence-cages around each planting bed and receive a little 'weed-identification' training from Bill.   His idea is we will create Rotary Teams of 2 or 3 people, each of which will tackle just one or two specific weeds to distinguish from desirable Native Plants rather than trying to recognize a variety of weeds and tackle them all.  Then each Team or individuals could work out their own schedules to go pull the weeds they know whenever it suits them rather than trying to organize group dates to do periodic clean-up of the gardens until the native plants fully mature in another year or two.
Any and All Rotarians are welcome next Tuesday to join us for an hour or so to help take the fences down, get some 'weed-ID training' and see how well the gardens are maturing.  Bill says many of the native plants are beginning to bloom!
If you have questions, let's talk at Club meeting on Friday.
Connie
For those who haven't been to the Pollinator Gardens yet, they are located beside the Riverwalk
just north of the Gateway at the Cedarburg-Mequon Road intersection

DID YOU KNOW?

Swim calls on US Navy vessels are a longstanding tradition, allowing sailors to enjoy a break and swim in the open ocean. This practice dates back to at least World War II and involves sailors jumping off the ship into the water for relaxation and morale-boosting. The activity often occurs in calm, warm waters and can be accompanied by additional leisure activities like cookouts.

Safety measures during swim calls include posting armed guards, such as sharpshooters, on the ship or in rigid-hulled inflatable boats to watch for sharks and other potential dangers. Crew members take turns jumping from the ship, often using aircraft elevators that lower them closer to the water to reduce the risk of injury from high jumps.

Swim calls can involve various Navy vessels, from submarines to aircraft carriers.
The latter offers a dramatic experience due to their size and height above the water.

This tradition allows sailors to unwind during long deployments and is often considered a highlight of their service time.

Meme of the week

Welcome to August and the Dog Days of Summer.

The name started as Days of the Dog Star in Roman times.

In addition to following Orion into the night sky, the Dog Star Sirius can be easily located in the heavens by following the line created by the prominent asterism Orion's Belt.

Whatever you call it, it's how we label August's hot and muggy days.

Although mosquitoes and cicadas have been absent so far this year, the hot and muggy Dog Days of Summer haven't let us down.
