Member Spotlight - Lee Szymborski

I have been a member of the M-T Sunrise Rotary since 1999, recruited by then Mequon Alderman Roger Reinemann. Roger was, shall we say, direct in his recruitment effort…. “You know, Lee, every City Administrator has been a member of our club.” With that irresistible invitation (!), I have been a part of our club every since, including a stint as club president.

I was raised on Milwaukee’s south side, graduated from Thomas More H.S., and received my B.A. and M.S. from UW – Milwaukee. My career has been built on my education in political science and public administration. For more than 33 years, I worked for four municipalities in Wisconsin and Illinois, including 15 years as Mequon’s City Administrator.

Since 2014 I have been with the Northbrook, Illinois-based firm, GovHR USA, as a senior vice president. Our firm does executive recruiting, and management consulting for cities, counties and non-profit agencies throughout the US.

My wife Mary Beth and I live in Mequon. Our three kids, Jacob, Sam and Sarah, are all out of college and not living in their old rooms.

Favorite reads include anything by Sara Paretsky and Erik Larson; also, Anthony Flint’s Wrestling with Moses, a lesson on the power of community organizing.

Break the sound barrier (as a teacher for the deaf)

Jean Irwin Hatfield, Rotary Club of Folsom, CA (Published in The Rotarian - January 2018)

When I decided to become a teacher for the deaf, I enrolled in a program at Fresno State. We started with 80 candidates, but by graduation we were down to 13. That’s how intense the program was.

People don’t realize the linguistic challenges of deaf students, especially the trouble they have learning to read. Why is that? Because reading is a sound/symbol system. You don’t read with your eyes but with your ears. This is why blind students, for instance, read at the same level as their sighted peers, while deaf students might graduate from high school reading at a fourth-grade level.

When I started out, 38 years ago, teachers dealt with this problem using workarounds, trying to figure out how to get information to deaf students in ways that didn’t involve reading. Then I heard about a professor in England, David Wood, who was doing groundbreaking work with the deaf.

The Learning Company was established in 1984 with only one purpose, to simply: “build better people to build better companies.” In 2017 that is still the basis that drives the business with only one minor change and that is, we see ourselves as an organization that “builds better people to build a better world.”

Chuck will share some of his vast knowledge, suitable for learners of all ages.  Chuck has spoken to over 93,000 students and alumni.
