Mequon Police Department achieves statewide accreditation status

MEQUON — The Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group (WILEAG) awarded full accreditation status to the Mequon Police Department in June. The designation follows the completion of nearly two years of work by the department, which culminated with a three-day onsite inspection in April. Representing the department at the award ceremony were Mequon Police Chief Patrick Pryor, Police Capt. Mark Riley and Officer Kristen James.

Accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. Among more than 500 law enforcement agencies across the state, only 46 have received full accreditation, according to a city of Mequon press release.

The Mequon Police Department is honored to be one of a select few law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin to receive accredited status through WILEAG, the press release said.

“I am extremely proud of the members of the Mequon Police Department for completing this monumental task within such a short period of time,” Pryor said.

The Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group is the governing body for State accreditation in Wisconsin. Accreditation is a voluntary program that requires agencies to comply with industry benchmarks across four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services. The program consists of over 200 standards, which include over 600 separate dimensions, that incorporate law enforcement best practices.

Rotary e-club empowers girls in Kenya

By Roberta Porter, Rotary E-Club of District 5450

I was shocked and stunned as I sat in silence listening to the pain in my daughter’s voice. She was calling me from Kenya where she had travelled as a volunteer with an Australian volunteer organization.

She described witnessing first-hand the impact poverty was having on the health and wellbeing of families and especially the children she was working with. The main focus for her at that time was lack of education about puberty, sexual health, and sexual violence.

She returned to Australia with a burning need to take action. After a quick fundraising campaign, she returned to Kenya and enlisted the services of Ujamaa Africa to provide a gender-based violence prevention program. Having completed the program in one school, she decided to go back and run the program in another school. We decided it was now time to talk to Rotary.

My husband and I are members of Rotary and have many contacts within the clubs in the Townsville North Queensland area of Australia. Victoria was invited to speak at a number of these clubs and at the district conference. She was overwhelmed with the support she received and was able to return to Kenya the following year and bring the program to another large school in this same community.

A Rotary LOL Moment

Rotary responds: support for Ukraine

Photo caption: Rotary members and other volunteers pack donated supplies at a rented warehouse in Zamosc, Poland, a major hub for refugees and a centralized coordination location for aid from clubs in Europe. Monika Lozinska

The Rotary Foundation and Rotary clubs around the world have hurried to provide funds, supplies, and services to Ukrainians displaced by the war.

The Rotary Foundation has raised more than $15 million in contributions that are already helping provide people in Ukraine with essential items such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing. Donations made to the Disaster Response Fund after 30 April will be available to all communities around the world that need assistance recovering from disasters.

A family that stands by you

Soon after Russia invaded Ukraine, Iryna Bushmina fled her home in Kyiv and journeyed to Vienna, Austria, staying with Rotary members along the way. Their generosity inspired Bushmina, a member of the Rotaract Club of Kyiv-City, to organize a larger-scale relief effort — and now, she works with Rotaract Europe to find shelter for thousands of refugees through a website called United for Peace.

"I used to just say that Rotary International is a big family. Now I really believe it," Bushmina says. "And I am convinced that this is a family that will stand by you."
