A Rotary LOL Moment

Dilbert by Scott Adams

Member Spotlight - Dick Kinney

Why am I a member of Rotary? I have always felt the need to be of service in the community. From my days in scouting back in Wichita, to present day of fulfilling a need in my soul to be of service to others. I really think it came from growing up in a family of six boys (being the oldest). More was expected of me to help take care of my brothers. Unfortunately, two of my brothers had polio, (one moderate case and one serve crippling case). Back in the 50’s both Mom and Dad worked to support the broud. I was there to take care of the brothers.

My family (my wife and two children) moved to Whitefish Bay in 1978 to be here a year. Forty years later, I am still here. (My son lives in New York City and my daughter lives in Washington DC. My wife died in 1997.

Because I worked downtown... the best service option for me was the Lions Club. Unfortunately, it was a dying club, but I got to experience what happens when the members age out and are not very service oriented. I did enjoy helping the Lion’s camp up in Rosholt, Wisconsin. My deaf daughter spent two weeks every summer up there and it was the highlight of her year.

I moved to Mequon in 2001, to get a change. I am very happy to be here. I started my own asset management business in 2003 and recently sold it in 2019. I am still consult on client relationships and investment strategy.

My passion is sailboat racing. I am active in the Soling class and on the board of the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center. Next year, I hope to compete internationally and try to qualify for a spot on a international ocean racing team.

I feel very fortunate to be a member of our club. The enthusiasm, the energy is unique and inspiring to be a part of. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your Rotary team.

Touching lives in Lagos

By Michael Effiong, Rotary Club of Ikeja South, Lagos, Nigeria

All around the world, the coronavirus pandemic is changing our lives and creating a new normal. But our members have seen the need and risen to the challenge. Now, more than ever, we need to show Rotary’s goodness as we practice Service Above Self.

Long before a nation-wide lockdown in Nigeria, Lagos had initiated its own stiff measures to stop the spread of the virus. This meant that our usually engaging meetings had to move online. The platform we decided to use was Zoom, and it has been our playground, a place where we share ideas and make plans to help our community.

In our country, hundreds of people congregate in market places, making it a place susceptible to the spread of the virus. We decided to build an awareness campaign to reach the many different levels of society that come to the markets, and encourage social distancing and hand washing. In conjunction with Fatee Mohammed Foundation, we visited three markets, the first being Abbatoir Market, in Agege, a Lagos suburb. Our team used a megaphone to instruct vendors to maintain a distance of two-meters. We also instructed people how to wash their hands for at least 20 second with soap and water, and handed out bottles of sanitizer. It was hectic but we got the job done!

Bobby is originally from Kansas City. He attended Northern Michigan University while wrestling at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Marquette. Bobby enjoys helping others and has been treated by chiropractors since he was 3 days old. He understands the benefits of preventative chiropractic care to families and kids of all ages, which is why he became a Chiropractor. He is a graduate from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City. Bobby and his wife Kristen have relocated to Wisconsin to be closer to family.

Bobby utilizes a wide range of treatment techniques to help you get better. Manual tissue therapies, ultrasound and muscle stimulation are used when indicated to speed up healing times. Bobby is experienced in workers’ compensation injuries, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, and spinal/extremity manipulation. (Just as the spine needs adjusting when misaligned – so do shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and ankles.)

Bobby gets great results treating back pain, sciatica, neck pain, sprain/strains and headaches, also plantar fasciitis and carpal tunnel along with many other conditions. Ask about Bobby’s community service opportunities such as health screenings/fairs, wellness classes, stress free lunch breaks, massage, repetitive lifting techniques and ergonomic instruction available to the public, local organizations and businesses.

Currently, Bobby is a volunteer wrestling coach at Homestead High School, a dedicated member of the Mequon-Thiensville Chamber and Sunrise Rotary. He is also on the leadership committee of the Grafton BNI.
