Member Spotlight - Dick Kinney

I was born in Washington DC in the last century. I grew up in Wichita, Kansas. What I enjoyed about growing up in Kansas was the “everything is possible” environment of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. I spent the next several years in the US Air Force and at the University of Illinois/Champaign-Urbana. Surviving sports in college and two years in Viet Nam has left me with two metal knees and a total shoulder replacement in my old age.

I met my wife in St. Louis, and we have two children (Ben and Charlotte). We moved to Milwaukee in 1978, (to be here a year). I lost my wife to cancer in 1997.

I am currently semi-retired after selling my money management firm to two great friends, who have expanded the firm in assets and client relationships.

My main hobby is sailboat racing.

I am active as a board member of the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, and the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin.

Walk in the Woods
This coming SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2024 ...
our Sunrise Rotary Club co-hosts the

Annual CANDLELIGHT WALK-IN-THE-WOODS
at Rotary Park with the Mequon Parks Department.

Doreen Lettau has been working to get information published locally and to prepare posters about our Club's environmental stewardship to encourage contributions to help support our efforts ... i.e., purchase plants, protection materials, tools, herbicides or other products we need to care for the trees & gardens we've planted, to help cover cost of labor when OWLT sees a need for action when volunteers aren't available, etc.

Now, we need to know how many Rotarian volunteers we'll be able to count on for help to greet, serve, and make the Walk pleasant for guests and successful as we encourage their support of the environmental protection of the Woods and Prairie Meadow.

Thus far, we've received commitments from only 7  Club members.

Please let Connie (pukaite@sbcglobal.net) know if you can help during any shift of the event.

HERE ARE THE  'TASKS'  WE HAVE TO ACCOMPLISH  ...

3:00 to 5:00 Shift ... Set-up activities
  • line FIVE 1/4-mile Sections of trail with white paper bags, candles & stones to anchor them
  • stack wood & kindling in 4 firepits, get ready for lighting fires @ 5 p.m.
  • organize tables for serving hot chocolate, hot cider
  • organize locations for dispensing roasting sticks & marshmallows for roasting over fires around Pavilion
  • set up Heat Lamps, and make sure they're ready to light
5:00 to 7:00 Shift ...  During the Walk
  • Meet, Greet, and Guide Walkers toward the trails, engage folks in conversation about   ... the weather,  the joy of being out in the cold on a winter's night, Rotary's stewardship of the Woods & Prairie ... just be friendly Rotarians ... look for and invite prospective members!
  • keep stoking Four warming fires
  • serve hot chocolate, hot cider  (keep hot beverages coming as needed)
  • dispense Marshmallows & sticks for roasting
7:00 to 8:30/9 Shift ...  End of the Walk and Wrap-up
  • continue to engage Walkers as long as any are still around trails/pavilion
( Walk publicized to end at 7:30 pm so we can expect few newcomers thereafter)
  • collect candles & bags from trails
  • make sure fires are tamped down completely out before leaving
Attached is a map showing the trails.

Exchange Student Weekend

Dear friends,

Our annual youth exchange weekend is fast approaching! We are still in need of 2-3 families who could open their hearts & home to an exchange student (or 2) for the weekend.

Friday, March 1: Meet as a group at the Mequon Public Market in the evening to do a planned activity with all 6 students and our Rotary host families at a location TBD (perhaps an Admirals game, dinner, etc.)

Saturday, March 2: Planned activities with all 6 students and our Rotary host families at locations TBD throughout the day and evening (perhaps the Milwaukee Market, museum, sledding, dinner at the Safe House, etc.)

Sunday, March 3: Brunch at a Rotarian's home and then students get picked up to head home afterwards. Event wraps up by noon.

These plans are tentative, but it gives you an idea of the commitment you'd have for the weekend. Expenses will be paid for by the club.

If you can host one night but not the other, we can work with that!

If you would like to help in another way besides hosting, please let me know and I can give you some ideas.

Our Rotary club is hosting the following students:
1. Raghev from India (male)
2. Caterina from Italy
3. Juliette from France
4. Saki from Japan
5. Sara from Denmark
6. Marcela from Brazil
