Christmas Angels Program for St. Marcus

As you might have heard, we are going to be angels to two St. Marcus families of 5 people each this year.

Family 1: Lasonya (mother, age 41), Avanni (girl, age 3 - K3), Quron (boy, age 15 - 9th grade), Jamarquae (boy, age 16, 11th grade), Anthony (Lasonya's  disabled brother, age 35)

Family 2: Shirley (great aunt & primary caregiver), Jade (girl, age 11 - 5th grade), Jamie (girl, age 9 - 1st grade), Taylor (girl, age 5 - K5), Tatum (girl, age 3).

We will be collecting gifts as well as household staples (cleaning supplies, toiletries, food) over the next few weeks until Friday, December 21. If you would prefer to contribute monetarily instead of shopping on your own, please bring cash to a meeting in advance of the deadline to ensure we're able to get everything together by the 21st. At this Friday's meeting, November 30, we will have gift tags and lists available for you to take to help your shopping excursions.

On Friday, December 21, we will be wrapping the gifts for the families as a club during our meeting. Will be a fun way to get the spirit and all be a part of the service project!

If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call me (aejorgensen@rwbaird.com, 262-240-3538).

Plot: Starr Carter is a 16-year-old black girl who lives in the fictional, mostly poor black neighborhood of Garden Heights, but attends an affluent, predominantly white private school, Williamson Prep. After a gun goes off at a party Starr is attending one weekend, Starr is driven home by her childhood best friend, Khalil. On the way home, they are stopped by a white police officer. The officer has Khalil, who is black, exit the car; while outside the car, Khalil reaches inside his car via the open driver-side window to check in on Starr, and picks up a brush. The officer, thinking Khalil picked up a gun, fires three shots into Khalil, killing him.

The Mission of Fisher House
The Mission of Fisher House

When a veteran or service member receives care at the VA, the last thing families should have to worry about is how to support their loved one during hospitalization. For many families, the VA Medical Center is hours from home, and it is difficult to predict how long a stay might be. Not only are there financial sacrifices with travel and lodging, there can be mental and emotional burdens as families seek answers and wait for results.

We hope to lessen these burdens so families can focus on helping their loved one heal. The Milwaukee VA Fisher House is conveniently located on the Milwaukee VA Medical Center grounds and offers 16 bedroom suites of varying layouts to accommodate single travelers or larger families at no cost to them. Designed with the interactions of guests in mind, guests experience the feeling of being home with a shared common kitchen, laundry room, dining room, living room, family room and a large patio and yard. Families share meals together and support each other through their joys and sorrows.
