Mequon-Thiensville School District seeks input on referendum
By Jeff Rumage

Mequon — The Mequon-Thiensville School District is seeking input from community members on how to proceed with a potential facilities referendum.

The proposed $20 million referendum would include $11 million for capital improvements; $1.3 million for Homestead's indoor and outdoor athletic facilities; $2.1 million to upgrade Homestead's performing arts center and restrooms; and $5.3 million toward the creation of collaborative learning environments at the elementary, middle school and high school level.

In the coming days, all Mequon and Thiensville households will receive a mailed document that explains the district's proposed referendum. The document also encourages residents to complete a community survey, which is open through Nov. 28. The survey, which can be completed anonymously, asks participants for their input on school facilities and possible solutions.

Residents are also invited to attend one of the school district's open house events in November. The district will host an open house at each of its seven buildings to allow community members to learn more about the needs at each school.

"Despite the very good work of the district staff to maintain facilities, many key facility components such as windows, roofs and boilers are at the end of their life cycles," said Mequon-Thiensville Superintendent Demond Means. "Over the last two years, board members, district staff and administrators have worked to evaluate and prioritize the district's needs. As we move forward, we want to engage our community in this important effort."

The board is scheduled to decide Dec. 15 whether the district should place a referendum question on the ballot next year.

Additional referendum information, including a link to the survey and a list of open house dates, can be found on the district's website, www.mtsd.k12.wi.us/about/referendum.cfm.

November gives us the chance to build greater ownership and pride in our Foundation. We have so much to celebrate. The new grant model, Rotary’s website, our publications, and our new branding effort all focus on building a strong message — the importance of contributing to and supporting our Rotary Foundation.

PolioPlus is highly successful because we believe in our commitment and are getting the word out that we are indeed “This Close” to ending polio. We give to polio eradication because we see very clearly what our money is doing and what we are helping to achieve. We all take pride in knowing that our donations are helping to create a polio-free world.

However, many Rotary members do not have the same pride and ownership in The Foundation’s Endowment Fund and Annual Fund. We are still falling short of our goal in the Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative. Why? Because Rotarians do not fully realize the power of these funds. Read More ...

The TM Rotary Foundation recently invested in a new sign next to the lower pavilion at Rotary Park. This is where organizations set up for events in the park. So for events like Gathering on the Green and Soccer tournaments visitors can now learn more about the Rotary history behind the park's creation and the other side will invite people to learn more about Rotary and "Join Us".

We can supplement or change a poster as needed to promote Rotary events.
