By Chris Davidson, Rotary Club of Newport News, Virginia

I attended the first-ever Rotary Young Professionals Summit held in Chicago on 26-27 September, which gathered 30 Rotarians under the age of 40 to discuss how Rotary can better attract and engage young professionals.

The summit was a huge success and thoroughly captured the essence of what Millennials and members of Generation Y are looking for — mentorship, friendship, opportunities, and fun. One of my Rotary mentors, past RI Vice President Anne L. Matthews, who I had worked with on district membership projects, had encouraged me to apply.

Mequon-Thiensville receives offer on farmland
By Jeff Rumage

Mequon — An unknown developer has bid $2.1 million for a 112-acre parcel of farmland owned by the Mequon-Thiensville School District.

Mequon-Thiensville voters gave the school district permission to sell the land in July, and the school district wasted no time in advertising the land to local developers — either through direct contact, on websites or in local trade publications. The land — located between Wauwatosa and Swan roads, just south of the Knightsbridge and Brighton Ridge subdivisions — has been zoned for lots as small as 1 acre.

The $2.1 million offer is slightly higher than the $1.9 million value placed on the land during a market appraisal conducted in February 2013. Superintendent Demond Means said he will not disclose the name of the potential buyer until the bidding process ends on Friday, Oct. 9.

Michael Ostermeyer, an attorney brokering the sale of the land, said six or seven developers have expressed interest in the property, and he expects to receive one or two more offers before the bidding process ends. The highest offer will go before the School Board on Oct. 27, when board members will be expected to approve or reject the offer.

I did a make up at the Rotary Club of Kern River Valley Rotary Club in California last Thursday, and they just happened to need a fourth to play in their local Chamber's golf outing on Saturday. I played, and we came in third at six under.

The attached picture shows us (Kern River Valley Rotarians Tom Borchard, Mark Owens, and me) receiving our trophies.

You just never know where a make up is going to take you. In fact, I gave Jan's sister some of my raffle tickets, and she won $138 in a 50-50 raffle!!

We are now wrapping up a three-day stay in Tahiti and will be leaving for Sydney in the morning.
