Rick Springfield to play Mequon's Gathering on the Green event By Jeff Rumage
Mequon's Gathering on the Green event promises to be bigger than ever with Grammy-award winning Rick Springfield headlining the first night of the event.
Springfield, who is best known for his hit "Jessie's Girl," will play at 8 p.m. at July 10 in Rotary Park, 4100 Highland Road. In addition to selling 25 million records and recording 17 top-40 hits, Springfield is also well-known for his role as Dr. Drake on General Hospital and his upcoming role in season 2 of HBO's True Detective.
Beth Bauer, the executive director of the event, said the board of directors decided to book Springfield based on his popularity in the Mequon area. The organizers also had a little help from one of their fellow board members, Rob Kos, who was once Springfield's manager.
"The feeling this year was to step it up with the entertainment this year," Kos said. "He has such a strong fan base around here, so we thought he would be a great choice. We're very excited about the reaction we've received. It's been very positive."
Gathering in the Green, which is celebrating its 21st year, helps raise funds for a Summer STEAM program for inner city and suburban youth. Professional engineers and Project Lead the Way teachers teach the STEAM programs, which add arts into traditional science, technology, engineering and math courses.
Additionally, a special Gathering on the Green fundraising event will be held on May 1 at The Watermark at Shully's at 146 Green Bay Road in Thiensville. The cost of $75 per person includes hors d'oeuveres, a three-course gourmet dinner, music and specialty wine and craft beer samplings.
Tickets, which range in price from $30 to $99, can be purchased on the event website at www.gatheringonthegreen.org.
