Thought of the Week

We’ve all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true. - Robert Wilensky

In a mean season, a quiet kindness prevails
By Alan J. Borsuk (JS Online)

It was about 8 a.m. three Sundays ago and I was on Interstate 94, driving my brother to O’Hare International Airport to catch a plane back to Singapore, where he lives. He had come to Milwaukee for a few days to help our ailing mother.

Without warning, a loud, rumbling sound started. Maybe a truck had pulled alongside me? But there was no truck. I think it’s us, my brother said. Agreed.

I pulled onto the shoulder. It was a flat tire on the rear driver’s side.

We were just a couple of hundred yards from the Drexel Ave. exit in Oak Creek, so I slowly drove off the interstate. As I pulled over a short distance farther, a car pulled in front of me with its emergency flashers on.

A guy got out. Maybe in his mid-20s, muscular. It was in the low 50s and misting, and he was wearing a T-shirt and no jacket.

"I’ve got a good jack if you’ve got a spare," he said. He quickly set to work. We were driving my wife’s minivan. It turns out the spare is located under the car and you free it by using this long, weird wrench on a bolt you access inside the car under the dashboard. Who knew? Good thing we had the owner’s manual in the glove compartment.

It’s not “your” project

By Dr. Francis “Tusu” Tusubira, a member of the Rotary Club of Kampala-North, Uganda

How many times do we hear Rotary members say, “we have our project in Kireberebe Kisunkaana?”

Let us get one thing right when dealing with economic and community development. And I will call this lesson one: it is not YOUR project.

It is a community project that you are supporting. Along these lines, I thought sharing a few experiential lessons is not a bad idea.

Lesson two: A community where disease is a challenge will lose so much time being sick that they cannot focus usefully on any other initiative that will help them develop. You cannot address economic and community development if you have not addressed basic health.
