People are volunteering less. Here’s what you can do about it.
Sit on your hands. That’s what I told myself as my son’s kindergarten teacher asked a roomful of moms and dads, “Who wants to be the room parent this year?”
The silence was interminable. Room parent is a volunteer position that involves organizing class celebrations and other activities. As an involved parent, I wanted to support my child’s teachers, but I had just started a new job and didn’t have time for another commitment.
Just keep your mouth shut and sit on your hands.
The tension rose. I couldn’t take it anymore. I opened my mouth to speak – but the voice that finally broke the silence was not mine. “I’ll do it!” shouted another mother, raising her hand just in time. The rest of us applauded, relieved. Read More ...

4K proposal gets mixed reaction in Mequon-Thiensville
By Jeff Rumage
Mequon — The proposal to add a 4-year-old kindergarten program to the Mequon-Thiensville School District garnered a mixed reaction at a public hearing Monday, Oct. 27.
Mequon-Thiensville Superintendent Demond Means wants to add a 4K program to boost enrollment, which would also give the district increased taxing authority. Having a 4K program would also better prepare students for kindergarten, and help identify learning deficits and special education needs earlier in a child's educational experience.
Means had proposed a public 4K program in 2009, but it failed on a 4-3 vote. Because the makeup of the board has changed in the last five years, Means once again pitched the idea to the board.
At the meeting, a team of Mequon-Thiensville teachers and administrators explained how a 4K program could improve a child's literacy and numeric skills, as well as help children develop social and emotional skills. Donges Bay kindergarten teacher Ann Differt said kindergarten students often struggle with following directions, team problem solving and collaborating with other students.
"Having a 4K program would definitely help build those foundational skills that are crucial to academic success and kindergarten readiness," she said.
