Member Spotlight - Connie Pukaite

Where were you born and where did you grow up?

I was born & raised on my family’s Massachusetts Homestead, settled in 1725 before the Town of Shrewsbury was established by decree of the King of England, and long before the Revolutionary War that Led to the United States of America.

What organizations have you been involved with?

From 1967 to 1972 I was the State and National Advisor To the Youth Association For Retarded Citizens. Then I was an Alderman for the City of Mequon from 1981-1986 and again from 2014-2017.  I was the Mayor of Mequon from 1986-1992. Also during that time I was a Director for WDNR. To round that off I consider myself being a full time volunteer since 1992.

Please tell us about your family.

Since the love of my life (my husband) Cliff in 2008, I have shared my household with two delightful pint-sized dogs – Bruiser & Tutter (they came to me with those weird names) until recently when Bruiser died.   I am the proud Aunt of 10 extra-ordinary nieces & newphews as well as ‘Great Aunt’ to 16 grand-nieces and nephews ranging in age from 3 to 21 years.  None live in Wisconsin, so following their lives keeps me on my toes.

What were your best business decisions?

Working for Association for Retarded Citizens for 26 years  (1965-1991). I developed services for children & adults with development disabilities, and influencing or drafting public policy laws to better serve them. I served as Program Administrator for 5 years, Executive Director for 21 years. Then I moved to the Wisconsin Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) for 13 years (1991-2004). I helped develop statewide quality housing for low & moderate income families, the last 9 years, I coordinated a major and highly successful urban initiative called Lindsay Heights to restore quality living in central city Milwaukee.

Rotary Clubs

Editors note: This is the third in a three part series on the structure of Rotary.

Rotary is made up of three parts:

  1. Rotary Clubs - Rotary clubs unite dedicated people to exchange ideas, build relationships, and take action.
  2. Rotary International - Rotary International supports Rotary clubs worldwide by coordinating global programs and initiatives.
  3. The Rotary Foundation - The Rotary Foundation helps fund our humanitarian activities, from local service projects to global initiatives.

Together, we work to make lasting change in our communities and around the world.

Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.

During the past 100 years, the Foundation has spent $3 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.

With your help, we can make lives better in your community and around the world.

Why should I donate to The Rotary Foundation?

Your donation makes a difference to those who need our help most. More than 90 percent of donations go directly to supporting our service projects around the world.

How does The Rotary Foundation use donations?

Our 35,000 clubs carry out sustainable service projects that support our six causes. With donations like yours, we’ve wiped out 99.9 percent of all polio cases. Your donation also trains future peacemakers, supports clean water, and strengthens local economies.

What impact can one donation have?

It can save a life. A child can be protected from polio with as little as 60 cents. Our partners make your donation go even further. For every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $2.

Chiara Participates in Homestead Homecoming

Homestead High School had their homecoming this past weekend. Our Rotary youth exchange student, Chiara, spoke with AFS at the pep rally in front of the entire school, marched with AFS in the parade and went to dinner and the dance.
