Locally owned Purple Door Ice Cream is expanding with a store at the new Mequon Public Market, it was announced Friday.

The store will be Purple Door's second retail location.

The Milwaukee company got started in 2011, making ice cream for such wholesale accounts as Sendik's Markets and Metro Market. It's owned by Lauren and Steve Schultz.

Purple Door opened a retail counter in 2012 in the Walker's Point neighborhood, at Clock Shadow Creamery, 138 W. Bruce St. It moved the retail operation just four blocks away, to 205 S. 2nd St., in 2014.

Mequon Public Market is being created by renovating a former city public works building.

The market will be part of the Spur 16 mixed-use development, which Shaffer Development LLC is building north of Mequon Road between Mequon Town Center and Buntrock Ave.

Mequon residents have asked for Purple Door to be part of Mequon Public Market, said Cindy Shaffer, owner of Shaffer Development. Many residents currently travel to Purple Door's Milwaukee store, she said.

Shaffer announced last week Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. as the market's first tenant. The market will have around 10 food and beverage outlets.

Spur 16 also will include St. Paul Fish Co., a restaurant that will be in a renovated former industrial building next to the Mequon Public Market; three three-story apartment buildings, totaling 155 units; and 10 town homes.

Mequon Public Market and St. Paul Fish are expected to open by early fall. The development's apartments are to be completed by summer of 2019.
